Learning Experience Design (LXD-700)

Description

This digitally delivered RPI ProCourse provides instructors and learning designers with skills to create engaging, objective-aligned learning experiences for adult learners. Starting with either a new concept or existing content, you will engage directly with a proven instructional design framework to create a well-structured learning experience designed to support learner and organization goals. You will leave the course with a comprehensive, research-informed design and development action plan to create and deliver your experience following the course. Completion of this non-credit course will result in a digital credential and a Certificate of Completion from RPI.

Project Overview

You will begin this process by identifying key details and abilities that your learning experience will address, developing learner personas, and crafting a problem/opportunity statement, resulting in a vision to guide the design and development of the learning experience. With this vision in mind, you will explore instructional design principles and creative, innovative delivery solutions to meet the learning needs for face-to-face, online, or hybrid experiences—including case studies, simulation-based exercises, and role-play activities.

Using these insights, you will craft measurable learning goals and competencies, then create a comprehensive, realistic design project plan to execute the development of the learning experience. As part of this process, you will also plan specific strategies to deliver an engaging and meaningful learning experience after the development process is complete, then craft a research-informed strategy to evaluate that experience to measure its success. You will conclude the course with a detailed action plan and guide to create, deliver, evaluate, and improve your learning experience post-course.

Technology & Logistics

You will complete all coursework through Rensselaer’s digital classroom environment, with feedback provided by your course mentor along the way. The coursework will primarily be self-paced, with synchronous sessions held at a regular cadence that will provide an opportunity to engage with the content and course mentor(s) in a live setting.

Learning Goals

Course completion enables you to:

  • Identify: Articulate the overarching vision for a learning experience by conducting a learner needs analysis and examining the abilities required to address.
  • Explore: Examine learning design theories, research-informed best practices, and innovative delivery methods in the context of the identified learning experience.
  • Design: Leverage a strategic, human-centered perspective to craft measurable learning goals and competencies for the experience, then create a comprehensive design project plan to help learners achieve those learning goals.
  • Prepare to Create, Test, and Improve: Prepare to execute the design plan by identifying tasks to create the learning experience, identifying appropriate delivery methods and strategies, and defining evaluation methods.
  • Communicate: Effectively communicate with stakeholders and prospective learners before, during, and after the design and development process.
