Full course description
Introduction to Applied Quantum
Description
This eight-week, digitally delivered RPI ProCourse offers a comprehensive introduction to quantum computing, designed for development managers and developers aiming to integrate quantum technology within their organizations. Throughout the course, you will engage in exploratory exercises, hands-on simulations, and immersive projects, gaining practical experience with quantum algorithms, error mitigation techniques, and benchmarking. The course includes mentorship from RPI faculty and IBM experts, who will guide you in applying quantum computing principles to real-world scenarios. In the final weeks, you will integrate your learning into a project demonstrating and evaluating a real-world quantum application. Completion of this non-credit course will result in a digital credential and a Certificate of Completion from RPI.
Coursework
You will begin this course by exploring the world of quantum computing, starting with its potential applications and ethical considerations. You will gain hands-on experience with Qiskit, setting up your environment, and running basic quantum algorithms on an emulator. As you progress throughout the course, you will dive into quantum linear algebra and phase estimation, building a strong foundation in these key areas.
You will also tackle the challenges of quantum computing, such as gate fidelity, noise, and error mitigation, learning effective strategies to address these issues. Your experience in the course will culminate in a final project where you will showcase your understanding of these concepts through a real-world quantum application, as well as reflect on the current and future states of quantum computing.
Technology and Logistics
You will complete all coursework through Rensselaer’s digital classroom environment, with feedback provided by your course mentor along the way. The coursework will primarily be self-paced, with synchronous Zoom sessions scheduled at a mutually convenient time. These sessions provide an opportunity to engage with the content and course mentor(s) in a live setting.
Audience
This non-credit course is designed for development managers and developers seeking to prepare to integrate quantum technology within their organizations. No prior education in quantum computing is required, but familiarity with coding/programming languages (including Python) is highly recommended.
Cost
The cost is $599 per participant. Refunds (minus processing fees) may be issued up to the first day of the course's official start date. After the course has begun, refunds are no longer available.
Outcomes
Course completion enables participants to:
- Describe the principles of quantum computing, including current and future practical applications.
- Articulate a use case for quantum computing in the unique context of your organization or industry.
- Develop a working knowledge of foundational equations underpinning quantum computing.
- Design algorithms and programs that can be applied to model quantum computing on a simulator.
